WHITETAIL BUCKS A whitetail deer is generally aged in 1/2 year increments because most are born in the Spring and six months later, in the Fall, their fawn spots have disappeared and are legally 'huntable' at six months old. If the deer survives to the next year's hunting season (Fall) it will be 1 1/2 years old, then 2 1/2 the following year and so on. A mature deer is at 4 1/2 years of age.
I first photographed Yianni in 1986 when he was about ten years old. In 2012, Yianni is about 36 years old, a mature man or...a mature whitetail buck.
