Smith & Bresson Club

Smith & Bresson Club
Smith & Bresson Club - I was inspired to create the Smith & Bresson Club for photography by the Pope and Young Club, which is for bowhunters. There are certain requirements, which a bow kill needs to satisfy in order to qualify for acceptance in the Pope and Young Club. The criteria to be accepted in the Smith & Bresson club will be based on my own subjective view of my work, which I will score. In short, those photographs that are part of this club will be my best work and those pieces, which would be part of an exhibition. Any photos that meet this criteria, will be marked by a small skull icon. Homage

'Homage' - 2012                                                                                                                                                            snake

Homage. When I bowhunt, I usually go alone. The only time I really need help from a friend is to drag a  deer to the pick-up truck after a successful hunt. The same is true when I photograph. I usually shoot alone but on occasion, I have prowled the streets with a friend.

This photograph is an homage to one of my best friends, in that the composition is similar to a photograph he took when we were ‘bowhunting’ on a trip to Italy, in 1981. My friend set up a ‘tree stand’, near a sign with diverging arrows, indicating a fork in the road up ahead. He ‘hunted’ the spot near that sign for days. I was fortunate enough to be in the vicinity when everything came together … as 2 old men, both with canes and stooped shoulders, passed each other, going in opposite directions, right underneath the sign with the arrows, going in opposite directions. It was one of my friend’s greatest  ‘trophies’.

In the end, the hard work of scouting and persistence paid off.
