Self Portrait 4
'Self Portrait 4' - 1986 snake |
Whitetail Does. A
field full of does can be an exciting site during the season, especially when
mature bucks are not on the hunting agenda. Does can be tricky though…with their
eyes, ears and (worst of all) noses, everywhere…seeing, hearing and smelling just
about everything. Drawing a bow can be a precarious undertaking, as the
slightest movement or sound will cause those whitetails to flag and the doe
group to scatter.

Hat
'Hat' - 1986 snake |
Location. In order to kill a heavy antlered, mature buck, a bowhunter
must hunt where these animals live.
Iowa, Kansas, Saskatchewan and Wisconsin are a few places that hold the
biggest trophy whitetails and if you want to take a Pope and Young buck, these
are optimal states (and provinces) to hunt.
To take good pictures, a photographer should try to find the
best subjects. Greece is a place
that lends itself to black and white photography with its unique topography,
crisp light and a people, notoriously full of character.

Homage
'Homage' - 2012 snake |
Homage. When I bowhunt, I usually go
alone. The only time I really need help from a friend is to drag a deer to
the pick-up truck after a successful hunt. The same is true when I photograph.
I usually shoot alone but on occasion, I have prowled the streets with a
friend.
This photograph is an homage to one
of my best friends, in that the composition is similar to a photograph he took
when we were ‘bowhunting’ on a trip to Italy, in 1981. My friend set up a ‘tree
stand’, near a sign with diverging arrows, indicating a fork in the road up
ahead. He ‘hunted’ the spot near that sign for days. I was fortunate enough to
be in the vicinity when everything came together … as 2 old men, both with
canes and stooped shoulders, passed each other, going in opposite directions,
right underneath the sign with the arrows, going in opposite directions. It was
one of my friend’s greatest ‘trophies’.
In the end, the hard work of
scouting and persistence paid off.
